The speaker for this evening will the Revd Dianne Hall in the stables at 8.00 pm.

This is to confirm that the next meeting of the Men’s Group will be on Monday 4 March at 8pm in the Stables.  Jo Farrow will be talking about weather forecasting.

Jo has had an interest In this area since she was 12 and has been involved in presenting weather forecasts for a range of TV and radio stations.  Jo is also involved in the Girl Guides; it was a weatherman (yes man!) badge in the Girl Guides that first sparked her interest in weather forecasting.  It promises to be an interesting evening – finding out a bit more about how forecasts are constructed.  I doubt there will be any clues about how to order up sunshine!

Promises to be a bright evening.

Jeremy Balfour MSP will be speaking and answering questions about his Christian experiences and his life in politics on Monday 4th February 2019 at 8.00 pm in the Stables adjacent to Belhaven Church.

Dear All

Following a chat with Rev Neil Watson, I am planning to restart the Men’s Group.  Since it is not a new activity – rather restarting a previous one – I am assuming that I do not need formal approval from the (Belhaven) Kirk Session, though I will inform them of it.

I’m e-mailing simply to let you know of this development and to seek any comments/views you may have.  Previously it was suggested that we continue with the first Monday in the month – meeting monthly –  usually October through to April or May.  I am conscious that Mondays don’t suit everyone – but then I doubt that we can find a night in the week which does - so I’m proposing that we continue with Mondays.

The immediate problem I have is that I’m on holiday on the first Monday in October, and just back on the second Monday, so I propose that our first meeting be on Monday 15 October – 8pm in The Stables.  For this first meeting I propose that we have an open discussion on the programme; I have some specific ideas to suggest and will ask a number of possible speakers whether they would be happy to come to speak – or be interviewed.  But nothing set in tablets of stone before we have our first discussion on 15 October.  One other point for that first meeting is to choose a name for the Group.  I would prefer to call it a specific name rather than simply the “Men’s Group” which has something of the non pc about it.  There is the group “Inspire” for the women, and I wondered whether we might think of something along that line eg “Explore” or “Enquire”.  I hope therefore that we can agree on a name on 8 October.

As noted, I would welcome any comments/views on this development.  I should say that I received the e-mail list from a previous Men’s Group circulation list (plus a few I’ve added).  I will use this list solely for the purposes of the Group – whatever we eventually decide to call it.  Please let me know if you would prefer to be omitted from the list.  Equally, I suspect there will be others who might be interested but not on the list – so if you know of others who may be interested please let them know and, subject to their agreement, I’ll add them.

Kind regards

James Wildgoose
